Staff Position Types

Regular

Regular positions are full- or part-time positions at the University that have regularly scheduled hours and continuing funding.

  • Full-time - an employee who is regularly scheduled to work over 1,511 hours/year. Eligible for all University benefits - subject to qualifying conditions of each benefit.
  • Part-time with partial benefits - an employee who is scheduled to work between 1,000-1,510 hours/year. Eligible for employer contributions to the retirement plan (after waiting period) and vacation, sick, and holiday pay on a pro-rated basis.
  • Part-time without benefits - an employee who is regularly scheduled to work < 1,000 hours/year. Not eligible for benefits, leave, or holiday pay.

Temporary

Temporary positions are used for various reasons including interim vacancies, extended employee absences, support for work areas with critical workload needs, significant university events or initiatives that require extra assistance or short-term support, and/or sporadic and non-recurring assignments. These positions have temporary funding.

Temporary employees may fill multiple temporary assignments, but typically do not work more than 999 hours in a calendar year. These employees are non-exempt and paid on an hourly basis.

There are two types of temporary assignments:

  • Short-term - have a set schedule with a beginning and end date of six months or less, including grant assignments.
  • Casual - typically do not have a set schedule or guaranteed hours.

Employees in temporary positions are not eligible for the annual merit process. Hours worked in a temporary position are not included when determining service.

Temporary employees are considered external applicants when applying for regular University employment and must follow established selection procedures for external applicants.

Limited Term Positions

Limited term positions are used for assignments longer than six months and are generally not expected to last more than two years. These positions have end dates and temporary funding.

Grant assignments longer than six months are a special type of limited term position and typically last for the duration of the grant.

Limited term employees receive benefits following the same policies as regular employees.

  • Full-time - an employee regularly scheduled to work at least 1,511 hours/year. Eligible for all University benefits - subject to qualifying conditions of each benefit.
  • Part-time with partial benefits - an employee regularly scheduled to work between 1,000-1,510 hours/year. Eligible for employer contributions to the retirement plan (after waiting period) and vacation, sick, and holiday pay on a pro-rated basis.
  • Part-time without benefits - an employee regularly scheduled to work < 1,000 hours/year. Not eligible for benefits, leave, or holiday pay.

Employees in limited term positions are not eligible for the annual merit process. Service in a limited term position does not count toward overall service.

Limited term employees are considered external applicants when applying for regular University employment and must follow established selection procedures for external applicants.
