Basic Life Insurance/Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)
Administered by
New York Life
Eligibility
First day of the month following date of hire (or date of hire if hire occurs on first work day of a month). If you are not in active service on the date your insurance would otherwise be effective, it will be effective on your first day of active service.
Coverage
The plan provides full-time employees with life insurance coverage worth two times their current base salary, rounded to the nearest $1,000, not to exceed a cap of $100,000.
Please note that coverage begins to decrease at age 65. For example, if an employee's benefit amount is at the maximum, $100,000, when an employee turns 65, coverage decreases to $65,000.
| Age | Benefit Amount of Coverage |
|---|---|
| 65 | 65% |
| 70 | 45% |
| 75 | 30% |
| 80 | 20% |
An accelerated death benefit (ADB) is also provided. The ADB allows an employee who is covered by the University's group life insurance policy to collect all or part of his or her life insurance benefit if he or she is diagnosed with a life expectancy of 12 months or less.
Cost
Paid for by the University.
Effective July 1, 2026, the University will provide an additional Accidental Death insurance benefit of $250,000 for sworn police officers in the event of a line-of-duty death. This coverage is being provided at no cost to eligible officers. This benefit is in addition to the Basic Life and AD&D insurance coverage currently provided to all full-time University employees. For complete details, please refer to the last page of the AD&D document.
