Domestic Partner Policy - Effective 3/1/2019

The University is transitioning its benefits eligibility requirement for domestic partners and will require legally recognized marriage for spousal eligibility in the University’s benefits plan.

In 2004, the University began providing same-sex domestic partners of University employees the opportunity to enroll in the University employee benefits program. The University adopted this benefit during a time when same-sex marriage was not legally recognized in Virginia. The University did not extend this benefit to opposite-sex domestic partners given their ability to marry. On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution guarantees same-sex couples the right to marry. Given that same-sex couples now have the right to marry, effective March 1, 2019, employees will not be able to enroll a same-sex domestic partner in the University employee benefit programs. Same-sex domestic partners who are currently covered as dependents can remain in the University’s benefits plan until December 31, 2019.

This change to spousal benefits eligibility, which has been considered by the University Benefits Committee over the past two academic years, will help the University balance the pressure of escalating health insurance costs with our commitment to providing all employees with excellent employee benefits offerings.
