Common Sections In a Resume

These are examples of titles for sections in a resume. Choose the ones relevant to your situation. You may need to make up new section titles depending on your needs.

Objective

  • Position objective or skills objective
  • Be specific
  • Longer does not mean better

Summary

  • List of strongest relevant factors, summary is compiled last

Education

  • Most recent degree first; do not abbreviate the degree - spell it out, e.g., Bachelor of Arts
  • Do not necessarily need to list transfer colleges
  • High school education should be left off of the resume

Experience

  • Use action verbs to describe responsibilities
  • Avoid "responsible for", "duties included", and "assisted with" phrases
  • Use bullets to effectively separate job responsibilities

Skills

  • Communication, computer, leadership, organizational, etc.
  • Use this area to show skills that have been developed through education, internships and work experience and/or activities

Honors

  • List those honors obtained through education and/or work experience
  • If an academic honor, can list below education

Activities

  • If need to fill space, keep relevant to position
  • List activities, such as clubs and organizations that you are a member of
