Change in Marital Status

If you have a change in marital status, please follow the steps below within 31 days of the event:

Step 1: Changes in Banner Web

To add your spouse as a dependent in Banner Web:

  • Go to Banner Web to change your marital status
  • After logging in, click Employee, then Benefits and Deductions
  • If your partner is not already in Banner Web, click Add a New Person, fill out the form, and click Submit

To make your spouse inactive in Banner Web:

  • Go to Banner Web to change your marital status
  • After logging in, click Employee, then Benefits and Deductions
  • Click on the name of the person you'd like to make inactive
  • Under Active, select Inactive from the dropdown menu

Step 2: Name Changes

Provide your new social security card (original) to Human Resources and they will update your name in Banner. If you would like your e-mail display name updated, call the Help Desk at least one day after your name has been changed in Banner. They will create a new e-mail address with the name change and forward your old e-mail address to your new one. You will keep your original Net ID.

Step 3: Changes with TIAA

If you have a retirement plan through TIAA and wish to add or remove your spouse as your beneficiary, call TIAA directly at 800-842-2252 or log into your account to change your marital status.

Step 4: Changes in Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance

If you would like to add or remove your self, spouse, or dependent child(ren) to or from the University's medical, dental, or vision insurance, please do the following:

  • Provide Human Resources with proof of marriage or divorce:
    • For marriage, provide marriage license
    • For divorce, provide divorce decree
  • Complete the Benefit Enrollment/Change Form. This can also be used to change your beneficiary for life insurance or increase your contribution to your FSA.
  • Submit to URHR via e-mail, by coming to the office, or through inter-office mail.

Please note that this must be done within 31 days of the event.

Step 5: Changes in Basic Life and/or Voluntary Life Insurance

If you are not changing your medical, dental, or vision coverage but would like to add or remove your spouse as your beneficiary to your Basic Life and/or Voluntary Life insurance plan, complete the Designation of Beneficiary form.

Please note that this must be done within 31 days of the event.

Step 6: Changes in other Benefits

If enrolled in the following benefits, please contact them directly with your marital status change:

  • Health Savings Account (HSA) through Health Savings Administrators: 888-354-0697
  • Legal Resources: 800-728-5768

Please note that this must be done within 31 days of the event.

Other things to consider:

  • Review your federal and state tax status. Contact Payroll to make changes to federal and state tax forms. 
  • E-mail URHR to request a UR ID number for your dependent's use of the Weinstein Center and tuition remission, if eligible.
